The Online Sunshine Plan
What is marketing? What is a market?
[Note: the following is my view, based on my experience. Don't believe it, don't treat it as Gospel. Test it for yourself.]
A market is anywhere people exchange goods and services.
Marketing is simply finding and building markets.
Markets are really communities. These communities are loyal, fickle, choosy, snobbish, elite, sniveling, shady – they come in all types. The community we want to find to offer are goods in can be composed of people with all of these attributes (but probably not all in one person…)
As I said before: 97% of all the stuff you are going to find about Marketing online is pure, unadulterated bunk. Crap. Shinola. BS. Hockey-puck. Junk.
Here’s the common myths of modern marketing
First myth: “Markets are impersonal.” Companies that believe this ignore that simple basic, among others – Markets are really communities. Communities consist of people. You can serve or not serve that set of people’s needs and wants. This is what makes or breaks individuals. And why people hate politicians and government in general – because they don’t give good service to people. They can’t. It’s not the way they are set up. Internet ripoff artists do this, as do credit cards. When you quit thinking about the people who give you money for your goods or services as anything other than individuals, you give poor service and they will eventually leave you.
2nd myth: There are no “consumers”. And there are no “customers”. There are really only clients and stakeholders. Jay Abraham goes over this in some detail. People are not there to make sure that company is profitable. The company is there to improve the life-quality of that individual. We are all in this together – there are no separate islands of businesses who go out on boats and cast wide nets for consumers to buy their goods. Companies are just as responsible for the condition of their clients as the clients are for themselves. And the clients are also responsible for the quality of service and delivery of that company whose product they use. Internet Marketers known for their ripoffs are just irresponsible companies who attract irresponsible customers. (And those who get their refunds are actually being responsible and shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to get customer service.)
3rd myth: There is no such thing as competition. The trick with this universe is that there plenty of stuff to go around, if you let people create what they need. Where there is lack, there are two factors present – 1) Really stupid people in charge of a really stupid government. 2) The “educational system” that created that stupidity.
Compare North and South Korea – one escapes widespread starvation only by handouts from other nations and spends their money on more weapons. The other has arguably the most advanced broadband in the world and is home to advanced electronics technology, popular vehicles, and a high average standard of living. Any country which was a stupid government has starving people and wars within its borders. (Or sends their armies to another country to fight.)
The universe, all Nature, deals in abundance. People are more creative than destructive. Educated and informed, they will consistently create a more optimal solution which benefits everyone and produces excess beyond what is needed. People are constantly improving processes to make them more efficient and effective. That’s evolution in evidence around us.
And if we are free to create anything and everything we want, there is no need to compete at anything (unless you have a completely arbitrary competition, like sports – which are considered entertainment.)
In a business, you don’t have to compete – you only have to create more. Create better solutions and you’ll find more people who would like to receive that solution. And this is where marketing comes in – finding, developing, and servicing a community.
And of course, I tell you not to believe me, but to check this out for yourself. One classic audio program on this point is the “Strangest Secret” by Earl Nightingale. Listen to this and see more explanation of the above, especially this last point.
Why it’s all about community
While I get into this much below, here’s the a short view of this subject:
-
Your passion is personal.
-
Everyone else out there also has a passion which is personal.
-
You are constantly trying to improve your own (and your family’s and friends’) life-quality.
-
So is everyone else.
-
You purchase or invest only in items and services which will forward that goal, directly or indirectly – like everyone else.
-
And you are connected to everyone out there and not actually separate. The more you inter-relate, the stronger these connections become.
-
And so this age-old concept of the Golden Rule comes full circle and meets up with marketing – only after you give value will people actually get interested enough to buy your product (exchange something valuable for your value.)
-
But you have to give first in order to receive. The more you give, the higher-quality the value, the more return you will get.
And that is my concept of marketing in a nutshell.
