What you should really be going for – just the cherry on top, not whole sundae

is a repeating graph which describes way too many things in our lives. It’s called the Bell Curve, after it’s shape. I’ll talk way more about it later – but as far as business goes, it tells us what is important, vital, and useless.
Some simple facts:

80% of your income comes from 20% of your clients.

80% of your problems are generated by 20% of your staff.
-
3% of all the advertising people do actual results in direct sales.
(Similarly, 3-5% of a given population are the source of the bulk of crime in any given neighborhood or area. Remove certain "usual suspects" from circulation and crime drops every time.)
There are the 80/20 breaks (noticed by the Italian economist Pareto) and other breaks at around the 3-5% points at each extreme end. (Like I said, these deal with way too many points which we would rather all have as something we can control in our lives. But knowing that the bulk of humanity follows this distribution, we can plan accordingly. In my next chapter, I go into far more detail as this relates to Internet Marketing – and leave alone much wider issues.)
Our use in business is to know that if you simply concentrate on what you do best – the value you can produce for others – then you can have everything and more of whatever it is that you really want. If you want to monopolize some market – good luck. Compare the histories of Microsoft, the U.S. Post Office, and certain dictators and you’ll see what a mess this is to try.
Concentrate on exactly what you can best do, the best service and value you can provide – and then it’s a piece of cake. Everything will fall into place after that. All business should really be something you can have and eat as well…
For now, let’s get on with the rest of this book. I’m leaving substantial articles in this Section that deal with various business basics. You’ll also see more in other chapters. But these will get you started and familiar with the "disjointed" style of organization which composes this book.
